History

Richard Zondag wordt in 1950 geboren in een Nederlands gezin in de Indonesische stad Bandung. Hij groeit op in deze Nederlandse kolonie, totdat het gezin Zondag gedwongen het land moet verlaten als gevolg van de Indonesische revolutie in 1956. Met zijn familie vestigt de jonge Richard zich in Nederland. Hij behaalt zijn diploma aan de Academie Beeldende Kunsten in Maastricht. Op zijn negentiende verhuist Richard naar buurland België. In Aalst opent hij zijn eerste kapperszaak. Vervolgens start hij een tweede zaak op in Brussel.

Zijn creativiteit, smaak en persoonlijkheid zorgen ervoor dat Richards talent al vlug wordt opgemerkt. In de jaren 1980 werkt hij als art advisor voor verschillende prominente modebladen, zoals “Marie Claire” en “Elle”. Richard wisselt reportages en promos voor haute couture Maisons, zoals Dior, Valentino en Nina Ricci, af met opdrachten voor de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen. Op die manier werkt hij samen met een groep jonge Belgische designers, zoals Ann Demeulemeester, Dirk Van Saene, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs en Maria Yee. Namen die de dag van vandaag allemaal hun stempel op de modewereld hebben gedrukt. Tessa Vermeiren, gewezen hoofdredacteur van Knack Weekend, doet regelmatig beroep op de talenten van Richard. Naast een bloeiende carrière in de mode-industrie, was Richard ook actief in de filmwereld. Hij werkt onder andere samen met cinematograaf Claude Lelouch.

Hoewel hij een vrije geest is, kwijt Richard zich altijd een strikte precisie aan zijn werken. Verbeelding staat centraal in zijn oeuvre. Als gevolg van zijn opleiding mengt Richard classicisme en logica met zijn eigen stijl, waardoor hij een krachtig werk creëert dat tot de verbeelding spreekt en tot in de puntjes is afgewerkt. In zijn gekende stijl probeert Richard in elke creatie een verhaal te vertellen aan de hand van een reeks beelden en concepten. Hierbij schuwt hij het gebruik van humor en ironie en een mix van classicisme en kitch niet. Deze cocktail aan ingrediënten zorgt ervoor dat Richards werk nooit saai wordt en telkens opnieuw weet te fascineren.

Né en 1950 en Indonésie coloniale, de famille Hollandaise, il rentre au pays en 1956 suite aux évènements politiques. Il étudie à l’Academie des Beaux Arts de Maastricht avant d’arriver en Belgique à 19 ans pour commencer sa carrière artistique. Il dirige les deux salons de coiffure qu’il a créés entre vie Bruxelloise et Flamande.

Remarqué pour son bon goût et ses multiples talents, il devient très vite directeur artistique pour des magazines de mode où il réalise reportages, catalogues, couvertures de magazines et films. Il côtoie, traverse et négocie avec les univers de Dior, Valentino, Nina Ricci, Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester. Il y exerce son talent entre une approche classique due à sa solide formation, et un style très personnel fait d’images puissantes, rêveuses, riches et nonchalantes.

Il consacre une partie de son temps à la création d’un hôtel de charme (avec son compagnon) qui servira de cadre à son inépuisable créativité, de ses talents culinaires à la conception d’ambiances décoratives.

De retour en Belgique, il reprend sa démarche picturale à l’aide de la peinture, sans compromis par rapport à sa démarche originelle. Celle-ci commence par la conception d’un scénario à partir d’images concises, représentatives, riches qu’il développe ensuite en séries d’images parlantes et évocatrices. Il s’appuie sur une méthode précise, rigoureuse en technique, utilisant tour à tour l’ironie et l’humour pour donner la parole à des sujets uniques, en réalisant des portraits d’une même personne traversée par des émotions différentes et subtiles, sand déplacer son regard, n’hésitant pas à rajouter un aspect “kitch” pour faire oublier le cadre classique sans le renier.

Par ailleurs, il cherche à se rendre compte d’ambiances du quotidien offertes à l’exploration du spectateur à des fins de reconnaissance ou d’identification. Ainsi, son dernier project - “humeurs” montre des instantanés de trois lieux où la vie s’est simplement déroulée.

Born in 1950 in colonial Indonesia to a Dutch family, he returned to his homeland in 1956 following the political upheaval. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht before arriving in Belgium at the age of 19 to begin his artistic career. He managed the two hair salons he had established, dividing his time between Brussels and Flanders.

Noted for his impeccable taste and multifaceted talents, he quickly became an art director for fashion magazines, where he produced features, catalogs, magazine covers, and films. He worked alongside, interacted with, and collaborated with the worlds of Dior, Valentino, Nina Ricci, Dries Van Noten, and Ann Demeulemeester. There, he exercised his talent, combining a classical approach, honed by his solid training, with a highly personal style characterized by powerful, dreamy, rich, and nonchalant imagery.

He dedicates part of his time to creating a charming hotel (with his partner), which will serve as a setting for his inexhaustible creativity, from his culinary talents to the design of decorative atmospheres.

Back in Belgium, he resumes his pictorial approach using paint, without compromising his original method. This begins with the conception of a scenario based on concise, representative, and rich images, which he then develops into series of expressive and evocative pictures. He relies on a precise and technically rigorous method, using irony and humor in turn to give voice to unique subjects, creating portraits of the same person experiencing different and subtle emotions, without shifting their gaze, and not hesitating to add a touch of kitsch to make the classic setting less obvious without rejecting it.

Furthermore, he seeks to capture everyday atmospheres offered for the viewer's exploration for the purposes of recognition or identification. Thus, his latest project – “moods” – shows snapshots of three places where life simply unfolded.
